Picture-Frame Border
A perimeter border gives the main decking layout a clearly defined, intentional edge.
This Plainfield homeowner contacted Naperville Roofing and Construction to restore the flat roof of his balcony. The project scope combined a new TPO roofing membrane with Trex Transcend® Lineage™ composite decking in Hatteras, perimeter gutters, and updated railing—addressing the roofing surface while creating a finished outdoor space.
The original balcony featured an exposed roofing surface and older wood railings. The homeowner contacted NRC to restore the flat roof, and the completed project combined that roofing work with new decking, gutters, and replacement railing.
NRC installed a fully adhered 60-mil TPO roofing membrane across the balcony roof. The membrane seams were joined using hot-air welding, with flashing installed at wall transitions and applicable roof details.
The completed scope also included replacement coping and new 5-inch seamless aluminum gutters around the balcony’s existing gutter location to collect and direct roof runoff.
NRC installed Trex Transcend Lineage composite decking in Hatteras as the balcony’s finished deck surface. A picture-frame border defines the perimeter, while the black railing provides a contrasting finish.
Installation included subframe preparation, structural review, and joist alignment. Board placement was planned to minimize seams and material waste while maintaining consistent spacing and sight lines.
A perimeter border gives the main decking layout a clearly defined, intentional edge.
The Trex hidden fastening system secures the main decking boards without exposed screw heads across the field of the deck.
A combination of board lengths helped reduce unnecessary joints. Board alignment and spacing create a consistent finished appearance.
Black picket railing replaces the older wood railing, framing the balcony with a simpler profile and straight vertical lines.
This Plainfield project brought together flat roof restoration, new perimeter gutters, Trex Lineage composite decking, and replacement railing. The completed work addressed the homeowner’s original roofing request while giving the balcony a finished deck surface.
The Hatteras boards, picture-frame border, hidden fasteners, and black picket railing create a cohesive result above the restored roofing system.
